I'm very excited to be featured in a new article in Momentum Magazine's Portland edition May/June 2010. I was interviewed by Marisa Howard to talk about how my art and bicycle get along! In fact they get along so well they are inseparable. I haven't picked up the paper edition, but here it is online

Red Bat Press has it's own mini birthday 2010 Calendar, but I took my inspiration from Sharon Wood Wortman "The Bridge Lady" who has put together an amazing fullsize Calendar celebrating 100 years in art & words of Portland's beautiful Hawthorne Bridge. Ms. Hawthorne is turning 100 years in December 2010. In Fact my little Hawthorne Bridge woodcut is in on the September page in this calendar a long with 49 other Portland artists! All sales of this calendar raise money for a 2010 Birthday celebration! Go to Bridgestories.com to find out more!

I wasn't so good at keeping this updated this summer - It was very busy summer with the usual June Bike Fun during Pedalpalooza and about six weeks straight of friends and family visiting in July and August which included my first trip out to Eastern Oregon. Beautiful! In early August I organzied the very successful Letterpress Printers' Fair. I also have been getting my new (since spring 2009) printshop in my garage organized and am finally having a one day open studio on Oct 10. If you are in town , do come by!

6/11/2009
Laura, a long-time Red Bat Press fan, sent me a picture of her wearing the Bunny on a Bike tee in Australia! Click the photo to enlarge! Sorry the Bunny on a Bike tees are out of stock, but I am in the early talks with a clothing company about getting the bunny on clothes again.. I'm not sure it will pan out, but maybe!

6/10/2009 Update on new orders from Shops. In the Bag on 23rd Avenue in Portland just starting carrying the Red Bat Press line. Also Angst Gallery in Vancouver is having an awesome bike art show, and has stocked up on all the bike designs. My first store in Bellingham, Washington, The Paperdoll, ordered a few designs and Blue Bottle in Seattle, Nest in San Francisco, and Big Sugar Bakeshop in LA have new shipments of art postcards. Other stores in Portland to stock up recently are Annie Bloom's Books, Presents of Mind, , Oblations Papers & Press in the Pearl and Bridgeport, Music Millenium, and Lemon Tree. And as always you can find the latest designs at Reading Frenzy first.

EVENT: Art Opening/Book Release

Hidden Portland: The Museums
Art Show and Guide Book Release by artist/local museum expert Carye Bye
First Thurs June 4, 6–9 pm, 2009
Reading Frenzy, 921 SW Oak, Portland, Ore.

Now this isn't a print show, but an original drawing & book release for another art project I'm working on. I love museums, and have been to as many as I know about here in Portland, so for the last few months I have been revisiting all the museums and making on site illustrations to go in a little artist book/guide book that will be out in the public starting June 4 at an art opening at Reading Frenzy. I will also be selling lots of original Portland people & scenes illustrated postcards for the month of June at the same location. If you are in Portland do come ot the opening. If not, you can stay tuned to the project at Hiddenportland.com.

5/21/2009
Last Week I finally got the rollers that WORK for my Bede-Hibbitt Tabletop. I am now about 90% set up in my printshop in my garage at home! I had a few kind printer friends lend me presses and parts, and that set up was going okay, but now that I have my very own press I am so delighted. And the best news of all, is the print quality is very good. Most of you won't even know I'm using a new press. I have added some photos about this journey into my general Red Bat Press set up on Flickr. The Bede-Hibbit Press is pictured on its first successful printing run. It's been a long Spring as I've been trying to figure out what size rollers the press needed to work properly.

3/4/2009
At the Buckman Art Show & Sale this Friday there will be lots of framed prints. More framed prints to look at here.

1/13/2009
Happy New Year! I've had ongoing internet problems for the last month, I'll spare you the details, but finally I can direct to you to some photos from the Crafty Wonderland and BikeCraft. This December Holiday season was really good, thanks to all of you who came out, especially those who came to Crafty Wonderland on our first snow day! We were amazed with the turnout (for those who don't live in Portland, snow is unusual, and the city shuts down til it melts. I can't believe this snow lasted about 10 days!)

Also if you aren't in Portland and you can not come see the Small Press Art Show at IPRC you can now see the Red Bat Press section online. The Exhibit features two presses, Red Bat Press and Loaded Hips Press. I am very happy with how it turned out. And ended up hanging lots of original blocks, and photos and illustrations related to different prints. I even hung up some of my woodcutting tools and watercolor set. The show is coming down after January 30th, so if you are in town go see it. Stop by the IPRC during open hours. Check the website for hours. The show is in the same room that many workshops are in, so come in when one is not scheduled.

12/3/2008
2009 Calendar Cards are now available online and at Reading Frenzy starting Dec 4 at a First Thursday Cheap Art Bazaar Opening.

Red Bat Press is indeed designing and printing 2009 Calendar Cards. Four new designs will be unveiled soon and available online at all the sales below, and Reading Frenzy and perhaps a few other stores. Stay tuned!

11/18/2008 HOLIDAY SALES
Below is a list of four holiday sales Red Bat Press will be in this year. The Secret Society Sale is one of my favorites - I really enjoyed it last year, and it the weekend following Thanksgiving and 10% of sales go to the Oregon Food Bank. On First Thursday in December, the Urban Art Network street gallery in the Pearl District moves indoors at the Ace Hotel's Cleaners space. I'm excited to hang out with my "junktown" friends Janet Julian and Steve Mathews. And the week after the 4th BikeCraft is upon us. I've been in every single one. This one is at Roots Brewing new expanded space, so it should be a cool change to set up there. I'll have a new bike calendar of course, and some bike zines too. And lastly the mother of all indie craft sales, the super colossal Crafty Wonderland on Dec 14 - this year at the Convention Center. Wow! I think there are 230 vendors. See you out there!

9/24/08 The 25 Bridge Set is a featured product in an Art/Music magazine XL8R8 (pronounced "accelerator") that is based out San Francisco & New York. The October issue is all about Portland. How's that for cool. Check out the online page or pick up a copy of the magazine.

9/17/08 Some news bits...

ART SHOW: Small Press Coming up on First Thursday Oct 2nd from 6 - 9 pm an new art show opening!
Location: Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC)917 SW Oak St. #218
Shannon Buck of Loaded Hips Press and Carye Bye of Red Bat Press present a joint show of small prints (lino-cut, woodblock, and mixed media). Using our excellent community letterpress print shop resources, these two small presses got their start right here in the IPRC, and launched their own small businesses making and selling prints. This show will tell their story, process, and show a collection of prints from each press. Show will be on view until January 30. This is the first early career retrospective for Red Bat Press.

SHOP UPDATE Shops that carry Red Bat Press have been updated on the home page. Reading Frenzy is always the first store to get new work (FYI) and carries the full line. St. Johns' Booksellers is now carrying a few artcards - mainly northern bridges and maritime (look for them at the Pirate fest this weekend). Little Finnegan's is also a new shop and I've always wanted sell there, so yay! Oblations Papers & Press downtown, Presents of Mind, and Powells Hawthorne just ordered a bunch of cards that will be on the shelves soon. Also new shops in other parts - Drees in Olympia, WA, Upstairs at Pierre Lafond near Santa Barbara, CA and Konditorei and Nest in the San Francisco area.

LAST THURSDAY So instead of an announcement of selling at Last Thursday on Alberta this September, this is announcement to say that I'm pretty sure Red Bat Press is no longer setting up for Last Thursday - i know - it's sad isn't it (well I think so). I really got my start selling my cards on Last Thursday and even set up as early as 2002. I remember my first time setting up as Red Bat Press - I had three cards! I told folks who stopped to come by next month and I used that deadline to work on a new card, and the collection grew and grew. Now my art postcard line is over 40 designs. Over the years, Last Thursday has changed, gotten bigger, and there have been more artists. This summer after missing Last Thursday in May, June, and July, I finally set up in August, and even though I arrived at 3 pm, someone had already set up in my favorite spot. Coming any earlier is crazy, especially since no one is walking around until after 6 or 7 pm. Also the last two months, Alberta Street is now closed to cars thanks to hard work from the neighborhood organizers. I think its great to have 15+ blocks free of cars and buses during the main part of the art walk, however setting up on the sidewalk isn't making any sense to me, people would rather walk the streets, and I'm not interested in setting up in big covered booth on the street - which is the new reality of the two art/street festivals Alberta Street has a year. So here's a huge THANK YOU to all of the friends I made and people I met when I was out selling out Last Thursday from 2002 - 2007. Six years solid! Read this old blog entry I wrote about the Magic of Last Thursday in 2006. Time for me to look for Magic elsewhere.

8/17/08 This Weekend Red Bat Press will be at the Portland Zine Symposium on Sat and Sun August 23 & 24 from 10 am until 5 pm on Sat and 4 pm on Sunday. Come on down. There will be probably 100 to 150 vendors selling zines, self published books, art, tees, etc. I'll have regular merch plus seconds and sale items too. Plus some old zines and a new one!

Portland Zine Symposium
PSU Smith Memorial Student Union, 3rd Floor
1825 SW Broadway at Montgomery
More info at pdxzines.com

5/20/08 I've been a busy busy bee. Completed two new art postecards: Everybody Vote and Everybody Read. And just got rollers for my Bede-Hibbit letterpress I'm setting up in a garage studio. But for now I'm on a 10 day bike trip down the California Coast. I'm bringing my watercolor set and will illustrate from the road. I haven't found the time to put the new cards up on the site. But both are at the Friends of Library Store at the Main Library in downtown Portland. I'll miss Last Thursday June as I'll be out riding. I'll let you know if I set up in July.

3/17/08 Red Bat Press is once again an artist in the Buckman Art Show & Sale on Fri April 11 and Sat April 12. Stock up on Portland Bridges, NW Bird Notecards, framed art, and the debut of a few new art postcards! Details: April 11, 5 - 9 pm ($5), April 12, 10 am - 5 pm ($2 donation). Buckman Elementary School (320 SE 16th Ave.)

3/16/08 Join us for the 5th Annual Bunny on a Bike Ride on Easter Sunday, March 23rd. This year the themes is the "Great" Convergence with 5 rides leading to one mysterious park for the "great gathering". Find out more!

2/1/08 2008 Calendar Cards are now only $3 each! Check them out here

12/21/07 So you've missed the deadline to get out Xmas gifts out in the mail. How about sending a New Year's greeting card! Limited supplies left of the four 2008 Calendar Card designs. Order online!

12/21/07 New Stuff! New Stuff! The last two Portland Bridges, Sellwood and the RR Bridge near St Johns were completed just in time for the December holiday sales and now you can order the 10 Bridges of the Willamette Set which comes with a limited ed. hand-set letterpress bridge stat card! Also new Northwest Bird Notecards are here. Sold as a set of 4 for $12 or individually for $3.50. Each card represents a local NW bird. Each day I see American Robins, Steller's Jays and the cute little Oregon Junco birdies mingling about. The Western Meadow Lark is the Oregon State Bird, but prefers to live further East I believe. The set comes in a nice durable mylar package. Great for birders or writers!

12/18/07 Wow, Super Colosal Crafty Wonderland was a complete zoo of handmades and handmade buyers! Within a half an hour the entire Norse Hall filled to capacity, and people had to queue up outside and wait for people to come out before they got in. Thanks to Cathy and Torie for all their hard work putting on this sale. It was a great success!

12/12/07 My last Holiday sale is coming up this Sunday, and it's gonna be Big, ahem Colossal! it's theSuper Colossal Holiday Sale by Crafty Wonderland. Over 100 vendors, and a one day departure for the regular venue, Doug Fir. Just a Few blocks away this holiday sale is taking place at the Norse Hall at the corner of NE 11th & Couch in Portland. From 11 am to 5 pm on Dec 16th, come to shop, come to look, or come to make recycled gift wrap with SCRAP in the 'Horney Troll' Bar! This event is open to all ages.

11/27/07 Three holiday art sales down, only two to go, and it's not even December. This weekend you'll find the entire Red Bat Press line at Jo Brody's Winter Boutique. Each year Jo, who is a fine designer of beaded jewelry, invites another artist to sell at her home sale. This year she picked me. So if you don't want to fuss with crowds, are in need of a Vaux's Swifts 2008 Calendar Card, then come to Jo's sale. Here are the details. Sat & Sun, Dec 1 & 2, 10 am to 5 pm at 423 SE 69th (near Mt. Tabor). To get there it is advised to take SE Belmont, go Left on 69th, go two blocks past Stark, then you're there! Another reason to come. The Debut set of all 10 bridges with a bridge stat card!

11/23/07On Thanksgiving Day, The Oregonian's In Portland insert had a feature article called Recrafting a handmade ethos by Erin Hoover Barnett. I am mentioning this since Erin interviewed me and wrote me into her fine article. Here's my bit.

11/25/07 I finally got over to Tender Loving Empire, a little shop in NW Portland that has been carrying the Portland bridge and Sailor Sweetheart Art Postcrds. This place is fantastic - tons of great tees, zines, and other great creatively made stuff. TLE is also a record label. The shop is at NW 18th & Lovejoy. Unfortunately because they shop is in a special building zoned for artist studios, they can't post their hours, but they always have First Thursday art openings, so I recommend stopping by this upcoming one on Dec 6 from 6 - 9 pm.

11/21/07 This Summer, the energetic Bostonian Shahin I. Beigi asked to interview me about all the things I do - Red Bat Press, Bathtub Art Museum, and Small Museums/Bikes. He had so many questions that it took me a long time to finish the the emailed interview. I was impressed with Shahin's questions and ability to do such good research. Also another funny story is just after the interview was posted on his Conversations blog, a lady walked into a shop or gallery Shahin works at, and he found out she was from Portland. He asked her if she knew Carye Bye. And she did! Now Shahin thinks I'm really famous. The lady happened to be none other than Suzanne of Mugwump!.

11/21/07 Awhile back my friend Anne of Lu Lu's Vintage wrote up a nice blog entry about vintage inspired art cards, and included the Sailor Sweetheart series. She also wrote about Shannon Buck's prints, whom I'm also a big fan of.

11/20/07 It's Red Bat Press's first time in the Secret Society Sale happening this Sunday after Thanksgiving on 11-25-2007. A lot of great friends are in the sale too, such as Jen of Knot Ugly, Suzanne of Mugwump, Jenna of Woolie Originals and Kiersten Crowley. All of us in the past have been in the Riches at Rimskys Sale. This year we have been all too busy to organize that sale, so go to this one instead! So see you Sunday with 2008 Calendar Cards, Bird notecards, Art Postcards, Stationery Sets, and more! Details: Art Sale located at the Secret Society Ballroom, 116 NE Russell St. (Next to Wonder Ballroom, 1 block west of MLK)on Sunday Nov 25, 11 am to 5 pm.

11/14/07 2008 Calendar Cards are here. Much later than last year, but just in time for Crafty Wonderland last Sunday Nov 11. This week Red Bat Press will be at BikeCraft III and the Sunday after Thanksgiving, The Secret Society Sale. Or order your calendar cards online. In person however they are 2 for $15.

8/30/07 Last Thursday is tonight. And is the last for me of the season, as I'll be out of town in September. It's a gorgeous day, so I'm excited to be outside on the sidewalk, peddling my prints!

8/30/07 On Saturday, Sept 1, the Fall 2007 Venuszine hits the news stands. And once again my work has been featured. This time in an article about Letterpress by Susan Beal - Explore & What Luck! are pictured on page 72. Also I'm pleased that the IPRC - Independent Publishing Resource Center is listed as the top pick to learn letterpress. I've been printing and volunteering at the center for about 5 years, and recently became the Publications & Events coordinator for the Center. Next week our brand new Catalog debuts with close to 50 events & workshops. And even better, our theme is Letterpress for Fall - Besides basic & advanced letterpress workshops, we have an old-time printing open house, letterpress by bike ride, field trip to Salem to visit a Letterpress museum, a printer's social and more!

Read copy of venus article.

8/29/07 EIGHT Bridges of Portland are now finished. I present you The Morrison Bridge. This summmer I went on a Bridge Walk led by Sharon Wood Wortman who is also author of the Portland Bridge Book - and a fabulous person. We even went inside the Morrison Bridge and they opened it up while we were inside. How cool is that! Originally I wanted to present the Morrison with the draw open, but it just wasn't right, so there you have it. Now there are only two bridges left - that I plan to do: Sellwood & The Burlington North Railroad Bridge 5.1 near the St. Johns Bridge. Sorry Marquam, you're too freeway for me.
